My grandmother Thekla, an Appenzell native, was Catholic, strict and resolute in her stance, yet warm and open in her life. She had two best friends; one married to an Egyptian and the other to a Senegalese. When visitors came from Africa two or three times a year, Thekla’s living room turned into a Muslim prayer room. Under the cross on the wall, a prayer rug was carefully laid out facing Mecca. Miloš was my Bosnian-Croatian-Serbian grandfather: a tractor mechanic; quiet, calm, level-headed – and with a passion for making everything mechanical work. I inherited an openness to the diversity of life from Thekla and the patience and persistence to stick with something until it works (again) from Miloš. I grew up in Switzerland, surrounded by different cultures, religions, languages, political structures and their impact on society and life. These contexts came with different expectations that taught me early on to observe, listen, recognise peculiarities and patterns – but also to ask questions to understand the various rules and learn how to navigate them. Understanding and grasping things without fully belonging allowed me to view life through the lens of an outsider and manoeuvre diverse environments. After teacher training and completing a law degree, I went on to live and work on four continents (Africa, America, Asia and Europe). As a practising lawyer, I worked in both the public sector and in legal education and research. For seven years, I was stationed in sub-Saharan Africa as a political adviser to political parties, NGOs, NPOs and international networks. Wide-ranging experiences in different cultures and working both in the public and private sector ultimately led me to organisational development and business consulting. In 2004, I began further training in understanding organisations, initially in mediation within and between organisations, later transitioning to a role as an organisational consultant. Since 2014, I have been working in business and organisational consulting in the private sector; primarily in a global corporation, but also as a consultant for start-ups, SMEs, NPOs and NGOs. After spending two and a half years working in Hong Kong, my partner and I have been living in Switzerland again since 2021.
